How often should I change my car’s oil?

Back in the day, your parents or grandparents would tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles, no matter what type of car, truck, or SUV you drove. Today, the answer for how often to change your filter and engine oil depends on the make and model of your ride. Most cars built after 2010 will have an extended oil change interval varying from 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

Check Your Owner’s Manual or Driver Information Center

Read your owner’s manual for your specific vehicle to get the correct answer to your question. If you lost the book, you can usually download a copy of the manual through the manufacturer’s website, like Ford, Toyota, or Nissan. Many cars today also feature an oil usage tracker with reminders that automatically pop up on your dashboard. If the car or truck says it is time for an oil change, get it done as soon as possible.

Today’s Engine and Oil Technology Help Save You Time and Money

Changes in synthetic oils and engine manufacturing mean that you only have to follow the old 3,000-mile rule if you are still driving a classic 1980 Honda Civic, a performance sports car, or regularly travel through extreme conditions.

Why should I change my oil according to the recommended schedule?

Engine oil serves to keep the moving parts lubricated, so the interior of your engine does not get scratched and pitted. When your engine gets damaged, it can lower your fuel efficiency and ultimately lead to catastrophic failure. Replacing an engine is exorbitantly expensive and challenging compared to keeping your ride maintained.

Oil loses its beneficial properties over time. It must be replaced to maintain the performance of your machine. The oil change interval listed in your owner’s manual was calculated to minimize engine wear based on typical driving habits.

Is it difficult to change my oil?

Almost anybody can change their oil using a few essential tools, a little muscle, and an hour of your time.

You will need:

  • The vehicle’s jack, or if you have them, a floor jack and jack stand jack
  • Proper weight oil and oil filter recommended by the vehicle manufacturer
  • Filter wrench and oil drain pan

Follow these quick steps to get it done:

  • Raise the vehicle and secure it by using a jack stand for your safety.
  • Remove the drain plug from the vehicle and allow all the oil to drain into the pan. Put the plug back.
  • Remove the old filter with the wrench. Install the new one with your hand.
  • Fill the oil following recommended amounts and check the level with the dipstick.
  • Reset the oil usage tracker on your vehicle.
  • Take the used oil to your local parts store for recycling.
