Located in coastal Orange County, Huntington Beach has reigned as a surfer’s mecca for decades. And one of the primo ways to bring wave riders to the shore has been in the classic VW bus, also known as the Microbus, Kombi, Bulli, or Vanagon. To celebrate this partnership between human and machine, the brand is launching the first-ever International Volkswagen Bus Day on June 2, 2023 in Huntington Beach.
Taking center stage that day is the 2024 Volkswagen ID. Buzz, which will appear in US showrooms in 2024 as the latest incarnation of the 1967 original. This all-electric piece of retro-cool accommodates your whole crew on three rows while ranging up to 260 miles on a full charge, buoyed by one rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 201 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. of torque. Coming later for greater traction off-road or on the rare rainy SoCal days is a dual-motor, all-wheel drive that puts out 295 horsepower.
The configurable interior accommodates up to seven through front seats with adjustable armrests, built-in massage, a removable center console, and tables that fold out of the backrests for the convenience of the rear passengers. Other driver perks include a 10-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10-inch infotainment screen that upgrades to 12 inches, and connections to your compatible smartphone. Everyone can take advantage of 40 cu. ft. of cargo space to tote boards and swim gear while plugging into a subscription-based built-in WiFi hotspot.
Enhancing the event are new product showcases, live entertainment, and an open call for the Type 1, Type 2, Cab Pickup, Vanagon, and Westfalia buses to be parked for spectators to admire. You’ll need to RSVP fast though, since only 300 of these vintage rides can make the cut, but you’ll get a free slot near the sand and a special commemorative gift. To avoid Friday morning traffic, park the day before at the gated lot with security provided.
