What is a Full-Sized SUV?

Are you in the market for a new SUV and know it needs to be big? A full-size SUV just might be what you are looking for. But what makes it full-size compared to a large or mid-size vehicle?

At the Beach Boulevard of Cars, our family of dealerships is here with all the answers and options you need.

Three Rows of Seating for the Whole Crew

A full-size SUV comes equipped with enough room to comfortably seat up to nine in its cavernous interior. The third row offers almost as much leg and headroom as the second row, unlike its smaller cousins. Some models feature luxury upgrades to first and second-row captain’s chairs for more of a VIP experience, but that will limit capacity to a maximum of seven.

A Rugged Design Ready for Towing and Some Off-road Fun

A full-size SUV will be built as a body-on-frame design, much like a light-duty pickup truck. This gives the large machine the ability to tow a trailer weighing up to 8,500 pounds. Most mid-size SUVs max out their towing ability at around 5,000 to 6,000 pounds. It may include true 4X4 capability and is ready to master unpaved trails, clamber over a sand dune, and even take you on a trip to ski country.

Room to Stow Tons of Luggage or DIY Supplies

With a family of five, it is nearly impossible to overload a full-size SUV. For example, with the third row folded down, you have over 90 cubic feet of cargo space in the Chevrolet Suburban. Most mid-size SUVs max out at around 70 cubic feet with their second row stowed. You can also add racks to the roof to bring along more bags, bikes, or surfboards.

Popular Full-Size SUVs Found on Our Lots

A true full-size SUV is more challenging to find than a large or mid-size version, but there are multiple options available on the market. If you need three rows plus extra space, look for the following:

  • 2023 Ford Expedition
  • 2023 Jeep Wagoneer
  • 2023 Chevrolet Suburban

Both the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Suburban offer an extended body version able to expand cargo capacity further. If your growing family does not always need the extra elbow room, these large third-row SUVs provide seating for seven or eight with a little less space left for groceries.

  • 2023 Honda Pilot
  • 2023 Nissan Armada
  • 2022 Dodge Durango
  • 2023 Toyota Sequoia

Full-size and large SUVs come loaded with a beefy engine easily able to handle long hauls.
