Why You Should Visit Huntington Beach

This part of SoCal called Huntington Beach earned its nickname “Surf City” because of the year-round swells that make it a surfer’s paradise. Bring your own board, get lessons, or rent from from the many schools that surround the beach.

If you’d rather just watch, the Huntington Beach Pier makes an excellent vantage point. At 1,850 feet long, this landmark stands out as one of the longest piers on the West Coast. A new restaurant is slated to occupy the building at one end, which was home to Ruby’s for years. Dogs, bicycles, skateboards, and smoking aren’t allowed on the pier. But fishing is welcome, and no license is needed.

If you’re into surf culture, make time for the Surfing Walk of Fame, which honors 80 international surf stars, including Hobie Alter, Eddie Aikau, and Tom Curren in such categories as Local Hero, Surf Champion, and Women of the Year. It starts at 101 Main Street downtown. From there it’s a short walk to the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum on the corner of Olive and 5th. The Art Deco building displays historic surfboards, surf sculptures, and information about surf legends.

The world’s largest surf competition, which attracts surfers from all over the world, is the US Open of Surfing, which is held for about a week in the middle of summer. It’s free to the public and showcases not only the best athletes that the sport has to offer but products and samples from your favorite brands.

Communing with Nature

Just a short drive north from downtown beckons the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a 1,300 coastal estuary where 200 species of birds make their homes on mudflats, coastal dunes, open water, and salt and freshwater marshes. Get there early because the small parking lot fills up quickly. You can then explore over four miles of public hiking trails through natural landscapes that have all but disappeared from Orange County.

If you prefer that your natural forays happen in a more manicured setting, try Huntington Central Park, which is the largest city-owned park in Orange County with over 350 acres of land. Several trails wind their way across three lakes, a disc golf course, open fields, and playgrounds. Catch up on your reading at the Central Library or find out more about native wildlife at the Shipley Nature Center.

Shopping

When you need a break from the sun and heat, step into the many shops at walkable downtown Huntington Beach. Try on a complete line of beachwear at Huntington Surf and Sport, shop for kites at The Kite Connection, or look for surfboards, wetsuits, and more at Jack’s Surfboards. A five-minute walk southeast brings you to Pacific City, a newly opened outdoor mall that hosts such name-brand shops as Tommy Bahama, M.A.C. Cosmetics, H&M, and Bella Sophia Chocolates.
